Richard; YES to worry. You are absolutely right. I will try and mill out the axle slot in that one just for the halibut. After that I will do it before milling the roller spaces. The one you see in the keyhead was actually a practice piece..to see if I had my spacings correct and if I was setting my dial indicator correctly as I was going along.
I will make one change however: Instead of making the rollers 3/16" wide they will be 5/32". That way there will be more width for the spacers which really are only about .030 in the pic. They tend to vibrate as I mill and that makes for a poor finish. Wider spacers will vibrate less or not at all.

AHA! Thanks "Teach"! Didn't anticipate the vibration problem. Am much the wiser now.

Good job Bent, I think I would agree with Richard to mill the shaft slot first, but if you feed slowly and make a few passes you should get it ok... Mike

Mike, Richard,
Yes I got my 1-/8" ball nose cutter and yes, I did two nuts before milling out the slots. LOTS better!
Here's a funny for y'all..I figured out the spacings needed, set up the dial indicators and milled away at the slots,,yessir things were going just tickety boo. I did the last slot and took the nut outa the vise to get a close look at my beautiful handiwork. Then I counted the slots. They were there...all NINE of them!!
Anybody planning on making a 9 string steel?? I'll sell ya 2 9 string roller nuts very cheap!

Mike, here on this forum it's all about butting in. One's idea is as good or better as the next. I'll check out your patent numbers when I have a minute.
Thanks

Bent -

It's great that we can laugh at ourselves when we goof. Here's one on me.

Fourty-five years ago I had to design a cap for a dewer (overgrown thermos bottle) for a low-temperature laboratory experiment. It needed to accomodate two microwave waveguides and several fixed coaxial tubes - all out of stainless and within a diameter of about 3". The waveguides and tubing would be brazed in place. Labored over the design and, when finished, brought it down to the machine shop and proudly handed it to the shop foreman. He said he'd call when it was finished. Wasn't back in the lab 15 minutes when he called and said the part was finished. I couldn't believe it! It was complicated! Ran down to the shop and asked where the part was. The foreman said to hold out my hands. He ceremoniously emptied two handfuls of air into my hands! I said "Say, what?" He informed me that, if he made the part according to the drawing, then the whole center section would fall out!

I had goofed on one lousy dimension. Sho 'nuff, he was right.

Live and learn - even if ya have to endure a red face for a little bit.
