Ht. of strings?

Post by louckswayne »

Guys
What would be considered the norm for string ht. above the fretboard?
In reference to sho-bud, emmons, carter etc.

Wayne, I believe the modern height to be 3/4" above the fret board, or 1 1/2" above the body

Wayne -

String height on my GFI is 5/8". The higher the strings from the neck, the worse the parallax problem. I think maybe ya can just flip a coin on this one.

I know the rains is 3/4" and your GFI is 5/8". I will probably go with 5/8"!

Wayne -

Something to consider.

No one has really researched the PSG in order to determine what really makes it tick. Given that, the height of the strings above the fretboard - determined by the changer and roller nut height - has not been shown to have a definitive effect upon either tone or sustain. I'm therefore inclined to lean towards Eldon and Stormy and will seriously consider placing mine at 1/2" as opposed to 5/8" or 3/4". The parallax problem will be relaxed considerably and the absolute height probably doesn't amount to a hill 'o beans anyway.

Ready to flip the coin?

:) The reduced angle of the strings at both the changer/bridge and the roller nut also deceases the total string tension at the two fulcrums ,hopefully aiding in reduced cabinet drop.....just a thought....Stormy ;)
