Leg adjustment mechanism

Hey y'all!
Can anyone describe to me how adjustable legs are designed?
Like, obviously it's some sort of friction lock, but what exactly is under the knurled bit? Is it a collet of some sort? Are the threads in the knurled bit tapered to apply pressure as it's tightened?
