back apron rail

Hi guys,
I have been watching pictures of the Zum and BenRom undercarriages and I am wondering how the cross rods are mounted on the rear apron. I noticed that Zum and BenRom use an aluminum strip on the back for some reason. I assume that that caps off the rods but I am not sure.
I am building a D10 guitar but have a hard time figuring this out. Is there someone here that can post a pic or 2 how this works please?
