Parts-guitar for under a grand?

Post by mdheugel »

Hey Builders, I think this is my first post. Great community here.

I had an old MSA Semi-classic for a while a couple years back, but I got rid of her when I was scrounging up cash for a down payment on my house. Of course, I've been hungry ever since to get back in the seat. I planned on picking up a new Zum last year, but things went south again for a while with cash and I was forced to pass it up.

Next month, I've got a nice little $1000 check coming from work for my 15-year service award. Now, I could use it to pick up another old beater, but I'm wondering if, instead, it might be worth trying to put together a nice "parts-guitar". The thinking is, if I could pick up the mechanical components, I can fashion the cabinet, legs, pedal bar, and electronics myself, and assemble. With a little TLC, I might just end up with a pretty damn nice guitar.

Any of you guys ever take this route? And if so, what advice can you give to a tinkering knucklehead like myself?

Thanks,

Mike
