Bass steel copendant

Post by na4it »

I know copendant more applies to the pedal steel, but thinking along the lines of building a 4-string console steel, with a 30" scale neck, what are your suggestions on the tuning choices. I saw the 4th neck on a Stringmaster tuning, which is:
E 032w
C# 038w
A 044w
F# 048w
E 055w
C# 071w
A 087w
F 110w

Don't know how well that would work, choosing 4 strings out of the 8 listed.

I played around with my bass and the tone bar, with the standard E,A,D,G ( top string to bottom)tuning, and it does OK, just wondering if there would be a better tuning out there.

Well you have F , A , C# , E there twice with that tuning, so definatly stick with those 4 if you used that tuning? Any open chord would be something to play around with,. D A D F# maybe? Are You going to use bass strings? That could probably be pretty cool

I would probably use flatwound bass strings. Would get rid of some of the noise on slide ups and downs.

I've been looking around for a defunct bass to scavenge parts from. Hopefully I can find a Goodwill deal or something that the neck is so bad nobody wants it. As long as the tuners and electronics are OK, that's all I would need. Will make the nut and bridge from aluminum angle, or some brass rod. Might even go string-thru-body for more sustain. Pobably look at a body thickness in the 2" range, either laminated or solid blank.
