I finished my first lap steel a month or so ago. Been lurking around here reading and learning for a good while. I have built about 20 Cigar Box Guitars in the past couple of years. Figured it was time to try a 'steel' model. I already have number 2 (no cigar boxes, pure wood) nearly finished and 3,4 and 5 are started. Having lots of fun building and I just love the sound (always have). I have an old Ohua six string my dad bought about 60 years ago, still plays fine. This first one is 22" scale. It is tuned to 'low G'. I have made several tone bars to play it with also using 1/2" and 5/8" steel rod and bubinga wood for a hand-hold. I like this style best. I have also made a couple of 3/4" bullet type bars. This one plays well and has great sustain, wide maple neck over 1" thick helps. I'll post next one soon. It's a 12 string! There are more pics here if anyone interested in this or the other guitars: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/52137.
