Lap Steel Project 2 "Finishing"

Post by Paul Lafountaine »

Well I did some finishing on my second project over the last week and here is what it looks like. I was a little disappointed with the stain at first, but it has grown on me. Looks rustic.

Hi Paul, I like it... What kind of finish did you use?
And what about the pickup?

The stain color is called provincial. I put 5 coats of Varathane clear gloss finish on it. I sanded each coat with steel wool before applying the next. I will be trying my hand at winding my own pickup. What I have there is just the bobbin. I need to purchase some pickup wire and a bar magnet. I still need to buy another set of tuners for the guitar. I only had 4 left over from my last lap steel project.

Hi Paul, would you agree to post some close-ups of the bridge?

Will do it shortly. Half hour or so. I will also give you a short explanation how I did it.

Hi Xavier,

I've attached a close up of the bridge. I used a 1/8" X 1-1/2" X 3-1/2" piece of aluminum flat bar. I routed a 3/4" deep X 3-1/2" slot in the head of the guitar were I wanted the bridge. Cleaned the slot good of all wood shavings left from routing. I then put some glue in the slot that bonds to just about anything and with a rubber mallet I gently taped the bridge into the slot and measured making sure that the top of the bridge was 3/4" above the body. I then wiped off the excess glue and let it sit for a day or 2. It is a very snug fit.

Hope this helps.
