Best wood for lap steel?

I know there is no best wood, but what do you prefer?

I have used red maple so far and enjoyed it. I am thinking of red maple in my next build, but I may laminate it with aspen, poplar, or red oak. I know these are not commonly used tonewoods, but they are kiln dried wood that I have access to. I was also thinking of just a solid 3" X 3" x 3' red maple neck through and trying something different for the body wings.
