the grain in Alder is real tight, it is a easy wood to work with, most of your Fender Guitars that are painted are Alder, i am having some laser art work done on this lap steel and alder is the perfect wood for that. Alder has a nice tone, if your looking for a sound with high output humbuckers. I am trying the Alumatone P90 pickup on this one. I get my Alder from a supplier in Oklahoma City he has a great supply and he lets me pick my boards. It is around $3.40 to $3.90 a board foot, for superior grade.
