Well it's finally finished

Post by ljs »

Hi All,
Well after quite a long time I have finally finished my latest 8 string lap steel. It is made from a piece of White Ash that I harvested from my fathers farm about 14 yrs. ago. It is a 8 string with a 25-1/2 inch scale length. I used 1/2" round brass for the bridge and nut. It has a Wallace TruTone for a pickup. I used leather dye to attain the color. It is the first time I have ever used lacquer. I used Deft in aerosol. About 13 or 14 coats. I used regular fret wire for fret markers. I had a few glitches along the way. First off I bought the tuners in 2 batches of six and I thought I ordered the same chrome finish but they the second batch has a nickel finish. So I ended up with 4 chrome and 4 nickel. Not real noticeable but I know. I also routed out the backside for the pots and routed too deep so the pots that I had were either too short or too long so I ended up shimming the long shaft pots, other wise the knobs would have stuck up too tall for my likes. I will try to put some pictures up but I must warn you I am not a photographer, and it has been a while since I have posted any pictures.

And 2 more. I'm not sure the pictures do the finish justice. I know I was very pleased. I did not use a filler before spraying the lacquer and it seems to work for me. Thanks for looking.

Thank you Ron, I appreciate your advice with my wiring. In regards to the wiring, the first time I wired it I had the volume backwards. I don't know exactly what I did, I just started over and re-wired it and it works as it should, clockwise increases volume.

Ha,Ha,Ha, these sort of things I just call 'individuality' LaVern, the man who never made a mistake, is the man who never made anything.

Best Regards Ron Mc.
