Sources for inlay

Post by bluesteel »

Hi, can anyone help me locate a supplier for the wood inlay seen along the front aprons of pedal steels - like the one on Bent's Blackbird? Stuart-MacDonald seem reluctant to ship MOP inlay outside USA (I live in the UK) - I haven't asked them yet about wood inlay. They only seem ticklish about some things, I've bought other parts from them", no trouble. Are there other suppliers?

I've just picked up some lovely clean maple and black walnut for the top and sides of my first PSG. Spent an hour looking at pieces put aside for me. My supplier couldn't help enough, nothing was too much trouble. He planed it for me through the thicknesser while I watched. The wood is free of defects and "sings" when you tap it - even old cloth-ears here can hear it. I'm quite excited.

Bluesteel, The ones on the BenRom Blackbird I got from here: http://www.constantines.com/
As this was just too expensive (actual cost, shipping, tax and brokerage fees) I quit dealing with this store. I found a supplier locally, here in Cambridge, Ont.:
http://www.amwoodinc.com/default.aspx and picked it up myself and is now in Blackbird Too, my current project.
Still, this is not of much use to you since you are in Britain. If you just cant get it there, and don't mind the extra cost, contact the one in Cambridge as I do believe that they ship all over.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck with your project. Sounds like you got some superb wood!
