General Pedal Steel Question

Post by Paul Lafountaine »

It appears the average pedal steel has a scale of 24" approximately. Correct me if I'm wrong please. What is the average width of the cabinets that you folks are making? I am just kind of wondering. If you kind folks would give me what you are using for a width just so I can get an idea of the size to think about. I am not looking at having a padded arm rest. I am also assuming a single 10 string.

Thanks guys

Paul

Paul, My cabinets are 10 1/2" wide. I feel that this is the minimum it should be. Others may differ.
Mind you, this is a D10 cabinet. SD 10 would then be the same
S10...frankly I don't know the standard width of that one.
Also, 24" scale is used a lot on steels. Another popular one is 24 1/4" scale. These can not be approximate measurements. They need to be exact, like 24 1/4" from middle of roller shaft to middle of changer shaft.
I use 24 1/4" scale on my guitars. Sound-wise, there is not much difference IMHO.

Bent ... is that 10-1/2 inside, or outside dimension?

Dave, that's outside. Just the wood without the endplate wraps.
