Whatever works for you is what you need to use, this goes back to my statement that, if you buy a tool box from a retired machinest, don't ever throw away any of the odd looking "thingys", they are for a purpose,like the pieces you use for centering. There is also a combination set(another HF cheapie)that works good for centering marking on round stock, angles and square set "combination square set" for under $10.

This is the combination set that I mentioned, you can also get them at a mill supply, Lowes/Home Depot type store, as with everything, cost,and quality go hand in hand. If you can afford it, and will have a constant use, I would recommend the better 4".or 6" set for what you will be using it. To find the center on a round part, place the "V" over the end, mark and turn 90 deg, mark, and you have the center of the part/shaft.
