Best choice for homemade pickup?

Post by fzartvaark »

I'm closing in on my first lapsteel and its time for a pickup..I just built a pickup winder and want to wind my own single coil..Looking for suggestions as to what magnets to use ( Alnico 2 vs. 5, steel?) I'm planning using c6 tuning looking for that clean country, hawaiian sound.

I use Alnico 5 1/4" by 3/4" in my single coils for the pedal steel I wind to around 14.5K and it sounds pretty good.

I use alnico 5 "Vintsteel" 8 string single coil made by Billy Mostyn in Australia. I use these as a pair in stringmaster with a pickup blend pot. The bridge pickup is reverse wound and reverse polarity. Both are wound to about 8.7k ohms. Go too high e.g 10.9k and treble would be less. That's my thoughts and also John Tipka's as I once emailed him about pickups for 8 string laps. Billy also tends to agree.
