Post by Bay »

I wanted to know if anyone has used just a multi effects unit w/built in volume pedal straight to board and got good pedal steel sounds. If so,what kind of effects unit and set ups. I want to record direct without amp.
Thanks

Hi Bay,
i'm using a Zoom G1 multi effects pedal for my steel and it sound great with my peavy session 500, i also use just the G1 for direct recording, it is clean and good effects like reverb and amp similator, i would recommand using an outgear volume pedal made for pedal steel cause volume pots for pedal steel are different from 6 strings guitar volume ect...but for effects the Zoom pedals sounds clean and are cheaper than some with the same qualities or more, it is easy to programe and you can have different patches for different songs , i'm on my second one from zoom (505, G1 ) still using the 505 for my tele and will buy the G2nu with USB pretty soon. :) , the tuner is good also, you'll probably spend thousands of dollars to get everything there is in those multi effects pedals if you where to buy them seperatly,again...get a real volume pedal made for steel guitar cause if you don't...you'll never get the feel and sound of what a pedal steel is suppose to be, if you want one for direct recording...get the one with USB ( G1U, or G2NU without onboard volume pedal ;)

here's a G1u on Ebay for $55us buy it now

Hello Bay,
I just found this post, so I hope you're still checking it. I perform in casinos in Nevada and they don't often let us use live "anything" on stage. No amps, or floor wedges. We use wireless in ears for monitors and have to go direct to the FOH board with our instruments. So I use a combination of three items to get a true tube amp effect for my steel. Here's what I use... 1) I use a Seymour Duncan twin tube classic. It has two real tubes, and two channels, one clean and one for that fuzzy tone. 2) I go out of the TTC and into a line 6 pod xt live. I get all my effects, plus a speaker cabinet simulator in one box this way. It has a volume pedal but it doesn't have the correct "feel" for me. Luckily, there's a 1/4" input for an external expression pedal, which brings me to 3). I have an old sho-bud volume pedal that I rewired, turning into an expression pedal. I plug it into the expression pedal input and I'm all set! So it's steel in to twin tube classic, out and into line 6 and then out to board w/volume pedal connected to control the whole thing. Hope that helps!

I use a DigiTech RP300 it is multi-effect programable or just use the pre programs already in it. I have owned the RP50, RP100 and the RP200. They are all great mono effects units. The RP 300 is mono to stereo.

I've used the RP200 to good effect also. I prefer my Telonics volume pedal though.

I use a Boss GT3 multi-effects pedal, a bit old hat these days but still a good unit and it does all that I need. When I first bought my pedal steel I used the volume pedal on the Boss but there were a few drawbacks, first the whole effects pedal needs to sit below the pedal steel and it's quite wide. I only have 3 PS pedals but it was still a tight fit. Second, it didn't give the action and smooth change required to get the type of response I was looking for.

I ended up buying the Dunlop DVP1 Volume Pedal, which at around £80-90 (UK) was a lot cheaper than buying one of the more specialised PS Volume Pedals. It has a tensioning screw, so you can set the action to suit, the response is smooth and it has a tuner jack which is really handy. Being Dunlop it has a nice big chunky piece of rubber on the footpedal, (a bit of tyre recycling? ;) ).
