Re: New guy, new steel.
Be mighty careful grooving those rollers on a drill press. Most drill press chucks are held on by a locking taper which is not designed or suitable for side loads like those created by using a drill press as a lathe. The result could be a face full of flying chuck and even a damaged drill press spin...

Re: starting another steel
Very cool project! Your key head looks nice and clean. I'm eager to see how the wood cross shafts work out.
I look forward to seeing this take shape. Best of luck!

Re: Build update.
Glad to see some activity here. I'll forever admire the "can do" attitude you guys without machine shop access have. Not that having machinery makes anything "easy". These things are beasts to build either way.
kudos to all y'all!

Re: Endplates: Welded? Machined? Bolted together?
sho nuff, I apparently didn't read you post or look at Bent's plates closely enough. On the end plates I've made the visible flange is either nonexistent or shorter than the inside flange. You can see this a bit in one of the pics here:

Do a search for "reverse countersinks".....they're the answer for you. A bit fiddly to use, but they work great!
